In Kerry's own words:

I have lived in Ilkeston all my life and studied Illustration at the University of Derby, graduating in 2009. From an early age I have loved drawing, particularly people, and before I could write words I would create stories in pictures. My interest in children’s books has always been present but it was only during a final project on an Art and Design Foundation Course that I discovered I was capable of writing and illustrating my own stories for children. I created my own rhyming picture book and went on to achieve a Distinction. I continued this interest in Children’s Picture Books throughout my studies at University, entering the Macmillan Children’s Prize in my final year. Since graduating I have continued to improve the quality of my stories and illustrations. I am inspired by artists such as Raymond Briggs, Quentin Blake and Emily Sutton, and draw on experiences from my childhood as well as inspiration from my nieces and nephew. I love working with line, and I find that pen and watercolour instantly capture what I want to communicate effectively. This book took around 5 years to complete, working around various day jobs. The idea was developed from my love of eating cake and the enjoyment of sharing a sweet treat with friends and family. I hope one day to become a published writer and illustrator of picture books as a way of escapism and imagination for children, in the same way as they were (and still are!) for me.
