Welcome Back!

Exciting news- we'll be open again from next Thursday, the 30th of July! We’re working hard and are nearly ready to welcome you back to the museum from Thursday 30th July and we can’t wait to open our doors again. For now we just wanted to tell you about how things will be when we open. We’ll review these procedures as we go along to make sure they are working and welcome any feedback.

We are COVID secure and everything we can do has been done to keep us and you safe. We clean every morning, and high-touch areas like the toilets, the bannisters, the door handles and counters regularly throughout the day. There are hand sanitizing stations at every door and outside the toilets for you to use

It’s an old building, with small rooms and corridors so we’ve got a one way system ready. Follow the squirrels around the building to keep everyone safe!

We think the best way to keep everyone safe is to minimise the number of people in the building therefore for the first time ever we will have to request that you book your visit in advance. There will only be two family/ bubble groups allowed in per booked slot, so social distancing should be easier.

Sadly social distancing means some of our favourite activities and events can’t happen for a while. We won’t be able to do crafts in the Hayloft at the moment but we’re making ‘take-away crafts’ bags full of craft stuff and ideas so you can do your usual museum craft at home. First bags are animal themed!

We’ve never been a ‘do not touch’ museum, but we have to take away our games and interactives for a while to keep you safe. To help children still enjoy the museum we’ll be putting on new trails for the kids every week, as well as a permanent new Animal Histories trail.

Our tea room will stay closed for a while but our gardens are still free to use. Sadly the summer beach is not viable this year but rest assured it will return in the future once we can ensure it’s safe.

We’ll reschedule our events from Spring and Summer for the future. We wish we could say more about events in Autumn/Winter but we are keeping this under review for now. Our shop will be open, but we will only take card payments and our toilets and disabled toilets will not be affected. They will however be cleaned more regularly. Access needs will be considered at all times, just speak to our staff for assistance.

If you have any questions we are here for you: this is your museum and we want to help everyone feel like they belong here. Thank you for bearing with us in the last few months. We’re incredibly excited to be opening again and wish you an enjoyable and safe visit.

Booking Information: please email us on, send us a message on facebook or call us on 0115 9071141 to book a slot.
