In October we attended the Derbyshire Heritage Awards 2014 at Derby Museum and Art Gallery. It was a great night that was made even better when we were successful in two of the four categories we entered!

staff hold up awards at ceremonyWe came highly commended in the 'Inspiration' category for the new War Gallery and First World War Centenary Event. We're very pleased with how the War Gallery has turned out and we've received some very positive feedback from visitors. The Centenary event was a great success and something we felt was essential in this anniversary year. We began the project at the start of the year and it was sometimes hard work but well worth it in the end and to receive this recognition is fantastic.

If getting one award wasn't good enough we then won the 'Reaching New Audiences' category for the Local Heritage, Local Lives Collections Access Project. This project saw objects from the museum's collection exhibited at four new venues across the borough. The exhibitions are:

  • 'Lace in Erewash' at Sandiacre Library
  • 'Excavating Erewash' at Borrowash Library
  • 'The Co-operative Society' at Long Eaton Library
  • 'The Fletcher Family' at Long Eaton Art Room

The exhibitions can still be viewed at the venues and will be renewed by the end of 2014 with four new exhibitions covering different parts of the history of Erewash. This is proving to be a great project, allowing more people than ever to see objects from the collection and learn about the heritage of the local area.

We'd like to thank the judges for selecting Erewash Museum for these two awards and the Derbyshire Museums Forum for organising such a brilliant evening.
